BBC Match Report

  • Leicester City are promotion candidates. It has been a hushed-up, water-cooler whisper before now but as the season draws to its crescendo, Leicester City are gearing-up to be the contenders to the early leaders at the top of the league. In 2002/03 it was Portsmouth who led the chase from Micky Adams' Foxes, in 2012/13 it is Cardiff City. The Welsh club have a fair cushion over the Foxes but City are hardly watching over their shoulders now - they are in 2nd place in the Championship on merit, have opened up a six-point gap over sixth-placed Middlesbrough and are ten points clear of the play-off chasing pack. Shout it loud: the Foxes are in the hunt.
  • Winning form is lucky form. It has been written about before on these pages that Lady Luck has played her part in City's form in recent years and she is certainly smiling on the Soar valley at present. Not only are the clubs on the Trent in turmoil, Leicester are winning games without playing particularly well. The performance against Wolves was hardly scintillating but the Foxes scraped-together a result.

Winners
Wes Morgan
The best centre-half in the division? Almost certainly. In his year at the King Power Stadium, Wes Morgan has proven a masterstroke of a signing for Nigel Pearson. Morgan's presence in defence is simply immense and his strength is crucial to this Leicester City team. Without Morgan it is hard to see where the Foxes would be this February; this commentator's guess is that City would be much worse-off.

Andy King
A wonderful return to form for the Welsh international after a long spell on the sidelines. Andy King was a dominant force for the Foxes, helping out young Michael Keane in defence with his intelligent tracking-back in defensive play. The best of King is in his attacking role, pushing forward behind the front men and the need for him to hold the midfield this season has somewhat stifled his performances. This was a defensive display but a very, very good one.

Anthony Knockaert
His goal may have been as much to do with Carl Ikeme's ineptitude in the visitors' goal as to the winger's skill but Anthony Knockaert still kept the Wolves full-back in his pocket for large periods of the game. Knockaert dominated on the right flank for City and his creativity is proving crucial to the promotion push.

David Nugent
Another goal notched for David Nugent who may be playing the bridesmaid to Chris Wood's bride at present but is still on-track to beat his top-scoring record of sixteen league goals this year. Indeed, it is that blossoming partnership that is sending Foxes supporters into raptures at present.

Losers
Michael Keane
Young defender Michael Keane has quite rightly had his loan spell extended. It's good for him, as he is getting regular, quality football at Leicester and it is good for the Foxes who have a sharp, bright and talented young defender in their ranks. Alas, Keane was one of the stinkers on a day where Leicester were past their best and without the experienced Morgan by his side and King cleaning-up in front of him, this could have been a standout performance for quite the wrong reasons.
